A Deep Dive into Long Island Media

The thing about news media is this: It seldom tells its own story. And that may very well explain why the Long Island news ecosystem is often overlooked or even regarded as an underserved area.

The fact is, Long Island is an incredibly robust media market, both on its own and as part of the New York metro market, the No. 1 media market in the world. Long Island has its own daily, Newsday, and a 24-hour cable channel with News12 Long Island. But the news coverage doesn’t stop there: Most are surprised to find out Long Island is home to more print publications than places with twice its population. Within Nassau and Suffolk counties you’ll also find about 18 commercial radio stations, along with two NPR affiliates. Digital startups and podcasts are emerging daily.  Much like Long Island itself, the Long Island media landscape is complicated and ever changing.

This media guide was designed not only as a directory so you can find the news media you seek, but to offer an insider’s view of how the  news works and who it reaches.

Inside our media guide, you’ll find hundreds of names, numbers and emails, plus audience reach information. For those not familiar with Long Island, data visualization maps illustrate Long Island communities and which reporters cover those communities, and where Long Island radio stations are located. Story pitching tips from our television reporters are in here, too.

Everything in here is to help advocates and media relations professionals fine tune and target their pitches and have their voices heard.
