Winners

The Folio Awards are judged by the public, to give newsrooms around the region powerful feedback on what the public wants to watch, read and hear from the news outlets covering our communities.

The Fair Media Council receives hundreds of entries each year. Some categories, such as Feature Stories, routinely see more than 40 entries. To win a Folio, a story must not only beat out its competitors, but score high enough to be deemed ‘award worthy’ by our judges.

Folio entry categories range from typical news categories (Breaking News, Feature Stories, Investigative Reporting) to categories of specific concern to the Long Island community (Environment News, School-to-Workforce News, Taxes and Accountability).

The Fair Media Council congratulates the following winners for tapping the pulse of the public with stories that shed light on important issues, events and people who have impacted our communities and our lives over the past year.

Social media categories were introduced six years ago, to illustrate the important role social media now fulfills in connecting and communicating with community. Despite social media awards being relatively new to the Folio Awards program, the Fair Media Council was one of the first organizations in the country to provide formal recognition of social media campaigns designed to inform, enlighten and inspire.Just as winners in our news categories must not only score higher than the competitors in a category but score high enough to be considered award worthy, social media winners must also meet those rigid standards and meet the approval of the ultimate critic: The public.
