Support FMC on Giving Tuesday

On Giving Tuesday, please support the Fair Media Council.

Make a tax deductible donation here, or shop Amazon.com using FMC as your charity of choice via this link. Amazon will donate 0.5 percent of the proceeds on eligible purchases back to the Fair Media Council. It’s a simple, automatic way to do good while you shop as you normally would online.

givingA 501c3 nonprofit organization unlike other, the Fair Media Council is one of the oldest, most successful media watchdogs in the country. FMC’s work focuses on advocating for quality local news — which is necessary to maintain vibrant communities — and in creating a media savvy society.

Today, with technology disrupting where and how people get their news, the educational component of FMC’s work is increasingly more relevant.

FMC’s signature events include Connection Day, the largest conference in the country to bring media and community together for a day of open dialogue.

Another signature event is FMC’s Folio Awards, where the public judges the news. The winning stories provide important feedback to newsrooms in the region on how well they’re covering the community and gives insight into what types of stories the community wants and needs in its news. The Folio Awards have recently been expanded to include social media campaigns, in a nod to the important role social media now plays in society.

The Fair Media Council’s Summer Social Media Boot Camp is the third signature event. Held in July, this half-day conference provides training, tips and best practice advice for using social media at work.

News coverage shapes communities, regions and often decides what people think about issues, people and events in their time. There’s never been a more important time to work to keep the media responsible for the news it produces.
