In 2008, Les Payne paid tribute to friend and colleague Bob Greene at the Fair Media Council Folio Awards. In doing so, he painted a picture of what it was like to be a young reporter, risking his life to cover stories while working with Greene at Newsday.
Here’s how we remember Les.
Before he walked out to the podium, he surveyed the room: news outlets mixed with community leaders. He flashed a broad a smile and said, “This is big. This is really big.”
His eloquence held his audience captive.
His career blazed trails for generations of journalists. His work fought for equality. He was a strong, kind man with a mighty spirit. He has left us, but his legacy remains.
