Summer Boot Camp

FMC’s Summer Boot Camp is designed for organizations of all sizes to improve their media relations skills.

This half-day program will take place at the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center, West End 2, on Thursday, July 13, 2023, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. This event is made possible by St. Joseph’s University & Northwell Health. 

Dress is summer casual. 

All are invited to attend our annual Summer Boot Camp, where the focus is on improving media relations skills for business and nonprofit organizations. This year’s event will feature a new format in a new location that offers a retreat-style setting to ensure attendees get the most out of their experience! All skill levels are welcome. 

Report for Boot Camp at 9 a.m. sharp! All attendees must be preregistered. Weather permitting, the morning will begin with a beach walk to clear your head, followed by morning refreshments and networking. Then, power up your laptop… 

Session 1: Get an overview of the current Long Island media landscape to gain an understanding of how to pitch different media outlets. Some of the topics to be covered:

  • why blasting one press release to all media is a very, very bad thing to do
  • how to identify your audience 
  • how to identify the right news media to reach your target audience
  • how to tailor a press release to get targeted coverage 
  • how to prepare once a reporter says YES

Session II: Meet & Pitch the Media
  • find out what stories they are looking for, and why
  • learn what NOT to do when trying to get your stories in the news
  • discover how they like to be pitched
  • network and begin to establish a relationship 
  • prepare to pitch on the spot and maybe, just maybe, you’ll land in the news

This event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center, West End 2. (Parking is free, but you must purchase an event ticket in advance.) Dress code is summer casual.  Bring your laptop, sunscreen and sunglasses.
