Designed for organizations and individuals, “The News Conference: Real & Powerful” brings out the best in local and national news to meet the community and engage in open dialogue sessions.
The event features breakfast and lunch with keynote speakers, 12 workshop sessions, exhibitors and networking breaks. It happens Thursday, Nov. 29 from 8 am to 4 pm at the Garden City Hotel, only on Long Island.
Featured Luncheon Speaker
The featured luncheon speaker is acclaimed Wall Street Journal investigative reporter John Carreyrou, whose work in uncovering the fraud behind fabled blood-testing company Theranos has turned into the best seller, “Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup,” which is now being made into a major motion picture starring Jennifer Lawrence as Elizabeth Holmes.
“People get a chance to go behind the headlines and beyond soundbites at the conference,” said Jaci Clement, chief executive officer and executive director of the Fair Media Council. “Using current events in the news, these discussions focus on demystifying today’s media landscape and offering transparency into the news process. The goal is to help people navigate the news with confidence, encourage them to play a role in the public conversation and show them how to do that, while meeting the media they need to make it happen.”
New! Certification for Professional Development
In addition to workshop tracks devoted to discussing current events such as “Power, Money & Politics,” reputation management, navigating today’s Long Island media landscape, learning best practices for media relations and more will be offered. Completion of three workshops, plus attendance at the breakfast and lunch, earns participants certification in one of three areas: Communication Leadership, Communication Management or Communication Strategy.
“The areas of certification were created to address one of the biggest complaints I hear from organizations everywhere, which is how to get from a ‘best-kept secret’ and evolve into an influencer,” said Clement. “This conference provides exclusive professional development opportunities that incorporate real-time learning from experts and establishing relationships with the media dominating the digital age.”
Who Should Attend?
Business and community leaders, entrepreneurs, public relations and media relations professionals, spokespeople, government officials and staff and community advocates are encouraged to attend, along with students interested in journalism, public relations and media relations.
