On this snowy Friday morning, we bring you some good news, about more news.
Blank Slate Media has announced something we don’t often hear: A new newspaper, the Port Washington Times, has launched. A reporter has been hired, dedicated to covering Port Washington. And more print editions may be soon introduced to the Nassau County news scene.
The Port Washington Times will be the sixth printed newspaper for Blank Slate, which may be best known for its online offering, The Island Now. Its other printed newspapers now cover Great Neck, New Hyde Park, Williston Park, Roslyn and Manhasset.
As part of its introduction, the paper is offering a free, one-year subscription to those living in Nassau County. (You can sign up here.)
‘A competitive local news market is vital to the health and well being of our communities,’ said Jaci Clement, FMC CEO & Executive Director. ‘The reality is, it’s our news outlets that drive public opinion. More voices in our media market mean a more informed community, and it increases the chances for a different variety of voices and issues to be covered.’
Also covering Port Washington is Anton Community Newspapers’ Port Washington News. Anton was founded in 1984 and offers 17 weeklies, in addition to some specialty publications.
Looking toward future expansion, Blank Slate is now eyeing Glen Cove, Syosset and Jericho, which are areas also currently covered by Anton Community Newspapers.
According to Slate, it’s “looking to become the paper of record, covering all aspects of the community in detail.”
In 2013, Blank Slate launched the Manhasset Times and the Roslyn Times.
Blank Slate started in 2010 with the purchasing of the Great Neck News, the New Hyde Park Herald Courier and the Williston Times from Litmor Publications.
Blank Slate is owned by Steven Blank, a former reporter for the Kansas City Star. To reach the company, call 516-307-1045 or email sblank@theislandnow.com.
