Robert Catell, one of the region’s most distinguished business and community leaders, is one of about 35 distinguished community leaders who have been appointed to judge the news in the Fair Media Council’s annual Folio Awards program, a high-profile celebration of news that has been judged by the public to best represent what the Long Island community wants and needs in its news.
“Being a Fair Media Council judge for the Folio Awards provided me with an opportunity to critique our
local news and encourage public dialog so that Long Island stories are not only honest but go beyond the local boundaries,” said Catell.
Catell is Chair at New York State Science & Technology Foundation, chair at Keyera Corp., Chair at Alberta Northeast Gas Ltd., Chair at New York State Smart Grid Consortium, Chair-AERTC at Stony Brook University, and Chair at Advanced Energy Research & Technology Center.
He is on the Board of Directors at American Vanadium Corp., Easy Energy, Inc., The Partnership for New York City, Brooklyn Botanic Garden Corp., The National Petroleum Council, Brooklyn Community Foundation, City University of New York, Long Island Angel Network, Inc., Long Island Association, Inc., The New York City Police Foundation, Inc., New York State Economic Development Power Allocation Board, New York State Energy Research & Development Authority, Our Energy Policy Foundation, and Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation.
He is formerly Chair & Chief Executive Officer of KeySpan Corp., Chair of American Gas Association, Chair & Chief Executive Officer of KeySpan Energy Delivery, and Deputy Chair & Executive Director of National Grid Plc.
“The Folio Awards is a green-light ethics program, unlike any in the country, which shows the media what the public wants in its news,” said FMC CEO Jaci Clement. “It’s an incredibly effective method for improving the quality of local news. We are honored to have such exemplary community leaders serve as Folio judges and make this program possible.”
Folio judges spend countless hours reviewing hundreds of news stories, which are submitted by media outlets primarily from the New York metro area, but often as far away as Canada.
Judging results will be made public at the FMC Folio Awards, a star-studded affair that is the biggest media event on Long Island, on Friday, April 24, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Crest Hollow Country Club. About 600 business, community and government leaders, as well as the media, attend. Major supporters to date include North Shore-LIJ Health System, WeiserMazars LLP, Protiviti, Hofstra University and the law firm of Murphy Bartol & O’Brien.
