Hundreds of journalists, business and community leaders were in attendance at the annual FMC Folio Awards on April 20, to find out who the public chose as the best in local news and social media.
The FMC received a record number of Folio entries this year, and 37 awards were given out for stories that ranged from Hurricane Irene to the murders at Gilgo Beach. The prestigious Robert W. Greene Award for Investigative Journalism went to Long Island Press, WABC-TV, and WSHU Public Radio.
This year marked the third year for social media categories at the Folio Awards. The Social Media Icon Award went to HJMT and the Best Non-Profit Campaign Award was awarded to Winthrop- University Hospital.
The complete list of winners is below.
The event held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y., kicked off with a keynote address by media personality Donny Deutsch. Deutsch makes frequent media appearances and came to fame when he hosted “The Big Idea,” a talk show spotlighting entrepreneurs and their quest to achieve the American Dream. He is also the chairmen of Deutsch Inc.
The CBS New York anchor team Maurice DuBois and Kristine Johnson co-hosted the award ceremony. Award presenters included television and radio anchors NBC New York’s Lynda Baquero and Michael Gargiulo, My9’s Harry Martin and Sharon Crowley, PIX 11’s Frances Rivera and Sukanya Krishnan, FiOs 1’s CJ Papa and Megan Vega, WCBS News Radio 880’s Steve Scott and Wayne Cabot, and Fox 5 New York’s Steve Lacy and Jill Nicolini.
“The Folio Awards signify the highest of honors in news and social media, because it is the public who judges the work for relevance to the community,” said Fair Media Council Executive Director Jaci Clement. “Despite monumental changes happening within the news industry, stories of substance and stories that matter are still being told. Those are the stories that earn Folios.”
Major sponsors for the event included Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Briarcliffe College, North Shore-LIJ Health System, and WeiserMazars LLP.
The Fair Media Council (FMC) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that educates businesses, nonprofits and the public to become media savvy. FMC also advocates for quality local news coverage and has about 200 New York Metro area businesses and nonprofits as members.
