Hundreds of journalists, business and community leaders were in attendance at the annual FMC Folio Awards Luncheon on May 6, to find out who the public chose as the best in local news and social media.
This year’s major winners were WABC-TV and Long Island Press, each of which took home the Robert W. Greene Folio Award in Investigative Reporting. WABC won for in-depth coverage of the “New War on Heroin,” while the Press reported on “Toxic Time Bombs.” The other major winner: WCBS-TV earned the Sean A. Fanelli Folio Award for excellence in education reporting. WCBS and the Long Island Press led the field with multiple Folio Award wins. In total, 32 awards were given out for stories that ranged from heroin problems on Long Island toNassauCounty’s broken parking meters.
A complete list of winners is below.
The event, held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y., kicked off with a live performance by Long Island’s own Robbie Rosen, who shot to fame as one of America’s favorite contestants on American Idol, and an invocation by Rev. Calvin O. Butts, president of SUNY-Old Westbury and pastor of the nationally renowned Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City. Rev. Butts is also a member of FMC’s Board of Directors.
Then, following remarks on the state of the local media landscape by FMC Executive Director Jaci Clement, CBS News’ Jim Axelrod delivered the keynote. Now a national correspondent, Axelrod is the former chief White House correspondent for CBS News. He also is the author of “In the Long Run,” a memoir based on his training for theNew York Citymarathon. Immediately preceding the awards ceremony, Axelrod signed his book for guests in the Folio VIP Reception.
Co-hosting the awards program was WPIX’s Jodi Applegate and Jim Watkins, who led a host of New York news personalities serving as awards presenters: CBS2 anchor team Maurice DuBois and Kristine Alexander, My9 anchor Harry Martin, NBC4’s Today in New York anchor Michael Gargiulo and NBC4 news anchor Shiba Russell, FiOs1 anchors Stone Grissom and Megan Vega, WCBS 880’s Craig Allen, Telemundo’s Jorge Ramos and WALK’s Patrick Shea, who lent his voice to serve as the event’s announcer.
“The Folio Awards signify the highest of honors in news and social media, because it is the public who judges the work for relevance to the community,” said Jaci Clement, executive director of the Fair Media Council. “Despite monumental changes happening within the news industry, stories of substance and stories that matter are still being told. Those are the stories that earn Folios.”
Major sponsors of the event include NYIT, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, North Shore-LIJ Health System and WeiserMazars LLP. The event is taped for broadcast by WVVH-TV, and airs to five million people on Hamptons Television and Time Warner Cable.
The Fair Media Council is a 501c not-for-profit organization that helps communities evolve by making them part of the local news ecology. For more information, please call 1.855.432.4763 or log on to www.fairmediacouncil.org.
