About Jaci Clement

Jaci Clement earned her first byline in a daily newspaper when she was in the fourth grade. She’s been working for and with media ever since.
Today, Jaci is executive director of the Fair Media Council, a New York metro area not-for-profit media watch organization that educates and advocates for quality local news coverage as vital to maintaining the community’s quality of life. In this role, she speaks frequently to business, community, and student organizations about media issues and also writes extensively on the topic.
Having worked both on the editorial and business sides of the news industry, Jaci is uniquely qualified for her current position. A journalism graduate of Hofstra University, Jaci served as editor of the student newspaper, The Chronicle, which at the time was considered by the Associated Press to be one of the best college newspapers in the nation. She was also a stringer for The New York Times education section during this period.
Her knowledge of the local news gathering process is extensive. As an editor and reporter for the Nassau Community Newspaper Group, Jaci wrote Nassau Confidential, a weekly political column that became a “must read” for those in power. She also created the now-beloved local mid-Winter celebration that features groundhog, Malverne Mel, Long Island’s own weather prognosticator. Mel is a fixture of New York area media coverage of Groundhog Day.
Jaci turned her journalistic talents to the coverage of economic news at Long Island Business News, where she eventually became editor and then marketing director. While at LIBN, Jaci earned a Press Club of Long Island Award for a story focusing on how cuts at the Small Business Administration would affect local businesses. As marketing director, Jaci developed LIBN’s line-up of special events and publications, which have become institutions of the Long Island business community today.
In keeping with her interest in the inner workings of news organizations, Jaci joined Newsday as Communications Manager, responsible for communicating to that newspaper’s 3,400 employees and collaborating on communications projects with other properties owned by the Times Mirror Company. Her internal communication innovations at Newsday included creating an in-house newspaper, broadcasting system, and intranet site. In addition, she was a speech and ghost writer for then publisher Raymond A. Jansen.
Her media expertise is well recognized. She holds the title of Executive Communicator, the highest rank of distinction bestowed by the Association of Women in Communications. In 2005 Jaci received the Distinguished Service Award from the Advancement for Commerce, Industry and Technology (ACIT), one of Long Island’s oldest and largest business organizations. In 2007, she was an invited participant in a project to shape the newsroom of the future sponsored by the Media Giraffe Project, a research initiative housed within the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, journalism program.
Jaci’s professional affiliations include membership in the Association of Women in Communication and International Radio and Television Society Foundation, Inc. She is a member of the Media Ethics Magazine advisory board and a director of Bethpage Federal Credit Union, a Long Island-based financial institution with more than $2.5 billion in assets.
