News stories are judged for importance to community life, and social media awards encourage organizations and media to tap the public’s pulse using new tools. The event is April 20, 2012.

The Fair Media Council’s Folio Awards began decades ago, to honor excellence in local news coverage. The award-winning entries are chosen by community leaders to provide the news media with invaluable feedback: What the news consumer truly thinks of the local news media’s performance.

As the news media has changed, so have the Folio Award categories. In 2009, the Fair Media Council expanded the Folio Awards, once again, to reflect the important role social media plays in shaping the way people communicate news and information. It all goes back to FMC’s fundamental mission: To ensure the public gets the news they need to protect their quality of life and keep their communities vibrant.

About the Judging Process

The FMC Folio Awards program is adjudicated by panels of community leaders. Their personal commitment to the betterment of the community enables them to judge entries with an emphasis on what news and information is most relevant to the public. Entries are expected to be well crafted and professional. Earning a Folio Award isn’t easy, but it is a tribute to those organizations and individuals who have effectively reached the public in a meaninful way. To that end, a Folio Award is among the highest of honors. FMC’s Folio Awards are taped for broadcast by WVVH-TV, Hamptons Television.
