FMC Expands Teacher Awards Program Entry Deadline is Nov. 30, 2012

The Fair Media Council has expanded its Media Savvy Teacher Awards program by introducing new categories to encourage 4th-to-6th grade teachers to use news in their classrooms and enhance the learning process. The awards program is sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.

The new categories include ‘money savvy kids,’ which is designed to encourage financial literacy;  ‘healthy minds and healthy bodies,’ designed to increase awareness of the importance of drug and alcohol abuse prevention (and in conjunction with the Long Island Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence (LICADD) and news literacy, a general category to further children’s understanding of local, national and world events.

‘Research tells us we have to get to the kids far earlier than college or high school if we are going to impact their learning in a meaningful way,’ said FMC Executive Director Jaci Clement. “The fourth-to-sixth grade time frame provides the perfect opportunity for giving children information they need to impact the way they think, and how they think.”
In entering the awards, teachers must complete a project of their choosing that incorporates using a variety of news outlets and encourages children to compare and contrast information. Details and entry forms are available at http://www.fairmediacouncil.org/programs/fmc-media-savvy-teacher-award/

The deadline for submissions is Nov. 30, 2012. Teachers anywhere in the United States are eligible to apply. For more information, email info@fairmediacouncil.org  or call 516.224.1860, ext. 700.
